Voice Out is a text-to-speech extension for Chrome and Edge. Voice Out reads webpages, Google Docs, PDFs, and ebooks aloud. Use this help center to install Voice Out, use its features, and find answers to your questions.

## What Voice Out does

{% hint style="success" %}

1. **Reads pages aloud.** Voice Out finds the main text on a page and reads it.
2. **Reads many formats.** Voice Out reads webpages, emails, Google Docs, PDFs, and ebooks in online readers such as Google Play Books and Libby. Voice Out reads text that it can find on the page. It cannot read text in images.
3. **Many voices and languages.** Use your browser's voices free of charge, or upgrade to Premium for more than 100 natural-sounding voices in more than 60 languages.
4. **Controls for your listening.** Set the speed from 0.3x to 3x, and set the pitch and volume.
5. **Text highlighting.** The Voice Out pop-up highlights the text that Voice Out reads.
6. **Custom voices.** Use voices from your own OpenAI, Google, Amazon, IBM, Nvidia, or Microsoft Azure account.
7. **Accessibility.** Voice Out helps persons with dyslexia, persons with visual impairments, and persons who learn better when they listen.
8. **Keyboard shortcuts.** Push `Alt + P` (`Option + P` on Mac) to start or pause the reading.
   {% endhint %}

Voice Out is for:

* **Professionals:** Review documents while you do other tasks.
* **Writers:** Listen to your draft to find errors.

The speed range is 0.3x to 3x. You can also change the speed in the Voice Out pop-up: click the speed value in the left sidebar.

{% hint style="info" %}
Some browser voices do not operate correctly at speeds higher than 2x. For high speeds, use a premium voice.
{% endhint %}

## Next steps

* To get natural-sounding voices, refer to [Upgrade To Premium](/premium/upgrade-to-premium).
* To use voices from your own OpenAI, Google, Amazon, or Microsoft account, refer to [Enable Custom Voices](/introduction/enable-custom-voices).

# Enable Custom Voices

Use voices from your own Amazon, Google, IBM, Nvidia, OpenAI, or Microsoft Azure account.

If you have an account with a text-to-speech provider, you can use its voices in Voice Out. You use your own API key, and the provider sends the bill to you.

{% hint style="info" %}
Custom voices do not use Voice Out premium credits. You do not need Voice Out Premium to use custom voices.
{% endhint %}

Voice Out supports these providers:

* Amazon Polly
* Google Wavenet
* IBM Watson
* Nvidia Riva
* OpenAI
* Microsoft Azure

## Step 1: Open the Custom Voices settings

1. Right-click the Voice Out button, then click **Options**.
2. Go to the **Advanced** section.
3. Click **Configure Custom Voices**.

You can also open the **Voice** list and click **Enable Custom Voices** at the bottom of the list.

## Step 2: Type your credentials

Type the credentials for your provider:

| Provider        | Credentials                                                                                      |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Amazon Polly | Access key ID and secret access key |
| Google Wavenet  | API key                                                                                          |
| IBM Watson | API key and URL |
| Nvidia Riva | URL of your Riva TTS proxy server |
| OpenAI | API key. If you use a different endpoint, also type the API URL. |
| Microsoft Azure | `SPEECH_REGION` (the Azure region of your Speech service) and `SPEECH_KEY` (your Speech API key) |

Voice Out tests your credentials before it saves them. If the test is satisfactory, Voice Out shows the number of voices that it enabled. If the test fails, Voice Out shows an error. Examine the credentials and try again.

{% hint style="warning" %}
For Google, the **Include Google Studio voices** option gives you more voices. Google Studio voices cost approximately 10 times more than Wavenet voices.
{% endhint %}

For IBM Watson and Nvidia Riva, your browser asks for permission to connect to the URL. Click **Allow**.

## Step 3: Select a custom voice

1. Go to the **General** section of the Settings page.
2. Click the **Voice** list.
3. Select a voice from your provider.
4. Click **Test Voice**.

## Disable a provider

To disable a provider, delete its credentials in the **Custom Voices** settings.

{% hint style="info" %}
Voice Out keeps your API keys in your browser storage. Voice Out does not copy them to a different computer.
{% endhint %}

## Open the Settings page

You set most Premium features on the Voice Out Settings page. To open the Settings page, do these steps:

1. Right-click the Voice Out button to the right of the address bar.
2. Click **Options**.

The Settings page shows **Premium Activated** at the top right when Premium is active.

## Premium voices

Premium gives you more than 100 natural-sounding voices in more than 60 languages. Premium voices sound much more natural than your browser's built-in voices. They are better for long periods of listening.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Voice Out does not select a premium voice automatically. After you upgrade, Voice Out continues to use your old voice. You must select a premium voice.
{% endhint %}

To select a premium voice, do these steps:

1. Open the Settings page.
2. In the **General** section, click the **Voice** list.
3. Find the **Premium Voices** group.\
   To find a voice quickly, type a name or a language in the search box.

{% hint style="info" %}
To find a voice again quickly, click the star next to the voice. Voice Out shows your starred voices in the **Favorites** group at the top of the list.
{% endhint %}

Voice Out keeps a different speed for each voice. When you change the voice, examine the **Speaking Rate** again.

## Premium credits

Premium voices use premium credits. Premium gives you 400,000 premium credits each month.

* A premium voice uses one credit for each character that it reads.
* Some of the highest-quality voices use two credits for each character.
* Your browser's built-in voices and offline voices do not use credits.
* Your monthly credits reset one time each month.

As an example, one page of text has approximately 3,000 characters. Thus, 400,000 credits are sufficient for approximately 130 pages each month.

To see the credits that you used, go to your account page: <https://voiceout.app/accounts/me/>.

If you use all your monthly credits, Voice Out opens the credit packs page. Refer to [Credit packs](#credit-packs).

## Reader

The Reader is a web app that reads your files aloud with your premium voices. The Reader operates in a web browser. Thus, you can use it on your phone or tablet, where you cannot install extensions.

The Reader accepts these types of files:

* PDF
* Word (DOC and DOCX)
* EPUB
* TXT, RTF, and ODT

The maximum file size is 50 MB.

To listen to a file in the Reader, do these steps:

1. Go to <https://voiceout.app/app/>.
2. If the page asks you to log in, log in with the account that you used to upgrade.
3. Upload your file.
4. Open the file, then click play.

The Reader keeps your files in your account. You can start a file on your computer and continue on your phone.

{% hint style="info" %}
To open the Reader from the extension, open the Settings page. Then click **Reader** at the top of the page.
{% endhint %}

## Open in Web App

You can send a webpage to the Reader. This is useful when you want to continue to listen to an article on your phone.

To send a webpage to the Reader, do these steps:

1. Open the webpage.
2. Click the Voice Out button to the right of the address bar.
3. In the Voice Out pop-up, click **Open in Web App** in the left sidebar.

Voice Out saves the text of the page to the Reader and opens it in a new tab.

## Pronunciation rules

Text-to-speech voices sometimes say words incorrectly. For example, a voice can spell "SQL" letter by letter. A pronunciation rule tells Voice Out how to say a word.

| Text | Pronunciation             |
| ---- | ------------------------- |
| SQL  | sequel                    |
| i.e. | that is                   |
| e.g. | for example               |
| w3c  | World Wide Web Consortium |

To add a pronunciation rule, do these steps:

1. Open the Settings page.
2. Go to the **Pronunciation Rules** section.
3. Under **Custom Rules**, click **Add Rule**.
4. In **Text**, type the word that Voice Out says incorrectly.
5. In **Pronunciation**, type the word as Voice Out must say it.
6. Click **Add Rule**.

For all the data about pronunciation rules, refer to [Pronunciation Rules](/premium/pronunciation-rules).

## Credit packs

If you use all your monthly credits, you can buy credit packs. Each pack gives you 400,000 credits for $4. Pack credits do not expire. Voice Out uses pack credits only after you use all your monthly credits.

To buy credit packs, go to <https://voiceout.app/add-credits/>. For more data, refer to [Credit Packs](/credit-packs).

## All your devices

One Premium subscription operates on all the computers and browser profiles where you log in. You must activate Premium one time in each new browser. Refer to [How to activate Voice Out Premium on a new computer/profile?](/help/account-and-billing/how-to-activate-voice-out-premium-on-a-new-computer-profile)

{% hint style="info" %}
Pronunciation rules do not copy to a new computer automatically. On the new computer, open the Settings page. Then click **Sync** in the **Pronunciation Rules** section.
{% endhint %}

## Manage your subscription

To see your plan, receipts, and credits, or to cancel your subscription, go to your account page: <https://voiceout.app/accounts/me/>.

If you cancel, you keep Premium until the end of the period that you paid for. After that date:

* Premium voices stop. Voice Out uses your browser's built-in voices.
* You cannot use the Reader.
* Voice Out stops applying your pronunciation rules. Voice Out keeps your rules.

If you upgrade again, all your settings and rules are available again.

## Questions or ideas

If you have a question, or an idea for a new feature, send an email to <support@voiceout.app>.

# Pronunciation Rules

Tell Voice Out how to say acronyms, names, and technical words.

Text-to-speech voices sometimes say words incorrectly. A voice can spell an acronym letter by letter, or say a name incorrectly. A pronunciation rule tells Voice Out to replace a text with a different text before the voice reads it.

{% hint style="info" %}
You must have Voice Out Premium to add, import, or sync pronunciation rules. Refer to [Upgrade To Premium](/premium/upgrade-to-premium).
{% endhint %}

## Examples

| Text   | Pronunciation             | Result                                  |
| ------ | ------------------------- | --------------------------------------- |
| SQL    | sequel                    | The voice says "sequel", not "S Q L".   |
| i.e. | that is | The voice says "that is", not "eye ee". |
| e.g.   | for example               | The voice says "for example".           |
| gif | jif | The voice says "jif". |
| w3c | World Wide Web Consortium | The voice says the full name. |
| Nguyen | win | The voice says the name as "win". |

## Open the pronunciation rules

1. Right-click the Voice Out button to the right of the address bar.
2. Click **Options**.
3. In the left sidebar, click **Pronunciation Rules**.

## Add a rule

1. In the **Custom Rules** area, click **Add Rule**.
2. In **Text**, type the text that Voice Out says incorrectly. Example: `w3c`.
3. In **Pronunciation**, type the text that Voice Out must say. Example: `World Wide Web Consortium`.
4. Click **Add Rule**.

If a rule for the same text exists, the new rule replaces it.

{% hint style="info" %}
For the **Pronunciation**, write the word as it sounds. Example: to make Voice Out say "Nguyen" as "win", type `win`. Try different spellings until the voice says the word correctly.
{% endhint %}

## Test a rule

1. In the **Test Pronunciation** area, type a sentence that contains your text.
2. Click **Test Pronunciation**.
3. Listen to the voice. If the word is not correct, edit the rule.

You can also open a webpage that contains the word, and listen to it with Voice Out.

## Edit or delete a rule

* To edit a rule, click the edit icon in the **Actions** column. Change the text, then click **Update Rule**.
* To delete a rule, click the delete icon in the **Actions** column.
* To delete many rules, select the checkboxes next to the rules. Then click **Delete**.

## Add many rules at the same time

1. Click **Bulk Add**.
2. Type one rule on each line, in the format `text,pronunciation`.\
   Example:

   ```
   SQL,sequel
   i.e.,that is
   w3c,World Wide Web Consortium
   ```
3. Click **Add Rules**.

Voice Out shows the number of rules that it added and the number of lines with errors.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Do not use commas in the text or in the pronunciation. Voice Out uses the comma to separate the two parts. A line with more than one comma causes an error, and Voice Out does not add that rule.
{% endhint %}

## Export your rules

1. Click **Export**.
2. Copy the text in the dialog box.

The export uses the same `text,pronunciation` format as **Bulk Add**. To copy your rules to a different account, paste the text into **Bulk Add** in that account.

## Use your rules on a different computer

Voice Out keeps your rules in your browser. When you add, edit, or delete a rule, Voice Out also saves the change to your account.

Voice Out does not copy rules to a new computer automatically. To get your rules on a different computer or browser profile, do these steps:

1. Install Voice Out and activate Premium on the new computer. Refer to [How to activate Voice Out Premium on a new computer/profile?](/help/account-and-billing/how-to-activate-voice-out-premium-on-a-new-computer-profile)
2. Open the **Pronunciation Rules** section on the Settings page.
3. Click **Sync**.

Voice Out downloads your rules from your account and adds them to the rules in your browser.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Log in to Voice Out before you add rules. If you are not logged in, Voice Out cannot save the rules to your account, and **Sync** cannot find them.
{% endhint %}

## How Voice Out applies the rules

* Rules are not case-sensitive. A rule for `sql` also changes `SQL` and `Sql`.
* Rules change only full words. A rule for `cat` does not change `category`.
* If two rules match the same text, Voice Out uses the rule with the longer text first.
* Rules operate with all voices: premium voices, browser voices, and custom voices.
* Rules operate on webpages, Google Docs, and PDFs that you read with the Voice Out extension.
* The [Reader](/premium/voice-out-premium-guide#reader) web app does not use pronunciation rules at this time.
* Rules do not use wildcards or regular expressions.

{% hint style="info" %}
Premium credits count the characters that the voice reads. A rule that makes text longer also uses more credits. Example: the rule `w3c` → `World Wide Web Consortium` uses 25 credits each time, not 3.
{% endhint %}

## If your Premium subscription ends

Voice Out keeps your rules, but it does not apply them. Voice Out reads the original text. You cannot add, import, or sync rules.

When you upgrade again, Voice Out applies your rules again. You do not have to add them again.

# Credit Packs

Buy more premium credits when your monthly credits are not sufficient.

Voice Out Premium gives you 400,000 premium credits each month. If you use all your monthly credits, you can buy credit packs. Credit packs let you continue to use premium voices before your monthly credits reset.

{% hint style="info" %}
You must have a Voice Out Premium subscription to use credit packs.
{% endhint %}

## How credits work

* Premium voices use one credit for each character that they read. Some of the highest-quality voices use two credits for each character.
* Your browser's built-in voices do not use credits.
* Your monthly credits reset one time each month.

## What a credit pack gives you

| Item                         | Value                      |
| ---------------------------- | -------------------------- |
| Credits in each pack         | 400,000                    |
| Price of each pack           | $4.00                      |
| Expiry | Pack credits do not expire |
| Number of packs in one order | 1 to 20                    |

Voice Out uses pack credits only after you use all your monthly credits. Voice Out applies pack credits automatically. You do not have to do an action.

## Buy credit packs

1. Open the purchase page: <https://voiceout.app/add-credits/>.
2. If the page asks you to log in, log in with the account that you used to upgrade.
3. Click **+** or **−** to set the number of packs.
4. Examine the **Order Summary**. It shows the number of packs, the total credits, and the total price.\
   Example: 3 packs give 1,200,000 credits for $12.00.
5. Complete the payment.

## Monitor your credits

To see your credits, open your account page: <https://voiceout.app/accounts/me/>.

The account page shows:

* The monthly credits that you used this month
* The monthly credits that remain
* The pack credits that remain
* The date when your monthly credits reset

Look at this page to know when to buy more credit packs.

# Why does Voice Out say "Cannot Voice Out this website"?

Voice Out shows this message on pages where the browser does not let extensions operate. You cannot change this. The browser blocks all extensions on these pages, not only Voice Out.

Voice Out cannot read these pages:

* Browser pages that start with `chrome://`, `edge://`, or `about:`, for example the Settings page and the New Tab page
* The Chrome Web Store
* The Microsoft Edge Add-ons store
* The Firefox Add-ons store

## What to do

* To listen to text from one of these pages, copy the text into a different page, for example a Google Doc. Then start Voice Out on that page.
* If you see this message on a different page, send the address (URL) of the page to <support@voiceout.app>.

# Why does Voice Out ask for permission to read this page?

Voice Out can read most webpages without more permissions. Some types of pages need a special reader. For these pages, Voice Out must have permission to access the site. When this permission is necessary, Voice Out shows this message:

> Voice Out needs permission to read this page. Chrome will ask to access websites.

Voice Out asks for permission on these types of pages:

* PDFs that you open in the browser, in Adobe Acrobat, or in Kami
* Google Docs
* Google Play Books
* Word documents on OneDrive, SharePoint, and Dropbox
* Chegg and VitalSource books
* Libby books
* Liberty University courses

## Give the permission

1. In the Voice Out pop-up, click **Grant permissions**.
2. When the browser asks for permission, click **Allow**.
3. If the page reloads, start Voice Out again.

Voice Out asks for each permission one time only.

{% hint style="info" %}
Voice Out reads a page only when you start Voice Out on it. For more data, refer to [Does Voice Out store the text I listen to?](/help/general/does-voice-out-store-the-text-i-listen-to)
{% endhint %}

## If you clicked Deny

Start Voice Out on the page again. Voice Out shows the **Grant permissions** button again.

# Voice Out says "Didn't find any text to read"

Voice Out shows this message when it cannot find the main text on a page. This can occur on these types of pages:

* Pages that show text as an image
* Pages that draw text on a canvas, for example some online editors and games
* Pages with very little text, for example a login page
* Pages that did not complete loading

## What to do

1. Wait until the page loads completely. Then start Voice Out again.
2. Select the text that you want to hear. Then start Voice Out.\
   Voice Out reads only the selected text.
3. Select the text, right-click it, and click **Voice Out selected text**.

If the page is a PDF, refer to [How to read PDFs with Voice Out?](/help/features/how-to-read-pdfs-with-voice-out)

If Voice Out does not read the text after these steps, send the address (URL) of the page to <support@voiceout.app>.

# Voice Out says "Language not supported"

Voice Out finds the language of each page. Then it selects a voice for that language. If Voice Out cannot find a voice for the language, it shows "Language not supported".

This usually occurs when your browser and your computer do not have a voice for the language.

## What to do

Do one or more of these steps:

* **Select a voice manually.** Open the Voice Out Settings page and select a **Voice** that speaks the language. For instructions, refer to [How to change the voice, speed, pitch, and volume?](/help/features/how-to-change-the-voice-speed-pitch-and-volume)
* **Use a premium voice.** Voice Out Premium gives you more than 100 voices in more than 60 languages. Refer to [Upgrade To Premium](/premium/upgrade-to-premium).
* **Add a voice to your computer.** Windows and macOS let you install more voices. Then restart the browser.
* **Use a custom voice.** Refer to [Enable Custom Voices](/introduction/enable-custom-voices).

{% hint style="info" %}
If Voice Out finds the wrong language, select the text and start Voice Out again. You can also set a **Primary language** on the Settings page. The **Primary language** shows only the voices for that language in the **Voice** list.
{% endhint %}

# The voice does not start

If Voice Out does not start to read, or if you see "Timeout, TTS never started, try picking another voice?", do these steps in sequence. After each step, try Voice Out again.

1. **Examine the volume.** Make sure that your computer is not muted. Make sure that the Voice Out **Volume** is not at the minimum.
2. **Reload the page.** Then start Voice Out again.
3. **Select a different voice.** Some browser voices do not start reliably. Open the Settings page and select a different **Voice**. Then click **Test Voice**. Refer to [How to change the voice, speed, pitch, and volume?](/help/features/how-to-change-the-voice-speed-pitch-and-volume)
4. **Decrease the speed.** Some browser voices do not operate at speeds higher than 2x. Set the **Speaking Rate** to 1.0x.
5. **Look for the pinned Voice Out tab.** If you closed it, start Voice Out again. Refer to [What is the pinned Voice Out tab?](/help/general/what-is-the-pinned-voice-out-tab)
6. **Restart the browser.**

## If you use a premium voice

If the browser opens the login page, the Premium page, or the credit packs page, refer to [Premium voices do not play after I upgraded](/help/account-and-billing/premium-voices-do-not-play-after-i-upgraded).

## If the problem continues

Send an email to <support@voiceout.app>. Include the name of the voice and the address (URL) of the page.

# What is the pinned Voice Out tab?

When you start Voice Out, a small pinned tab opens at the left of your tab bar. Voice Out uses this tab to play the audio. The tab lets Voice Out continue to read when you go to a different tab or a different page.

The tab closes automatically after 5 minutes with no playback.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Do not close the pinned tab while Voice Out reads. If you close the tab, the audio stops.
{% endhint %}

## Hide the tab

You can tell Voice Out to play the audio inside the webpage. Then Voice Out does not open the pinned tab.

1. Click the pinned Voice Out tab.
2. Click **Hide this tab**.
3. Click **Hide**.

{% hint style="info" %}
When Voice Out plays audio inside the webpage, the audio stops if you go to a different page in that tab. In Incognito windows, Voice Out always uses the pinned tab.
{% endhint %}

## Show the tab again

1. Right-click the Voice Out button, then click **Options**.
2. Go to the **Advanced** section.
3. In **Audio Player**, select **Player tab (default)**.

# The first words of each paragraph are missing with Bluetooth headphones

Many Bluetooth headphones and speakers go into sleep mode when there is no sound. Voice Out stops for a short time between paragraphs. During this time, the headphones go to sleep. When the next paragraph starts, the headphones need time to wake up, and you do not hear the first words.

## Solution

1. Right-click the Voice Out button, then click **Options**.
2. Go to the **Advanced** section.
3. Turn on **Fix missing first few words of each paragraph when using Bluetooth headset**.

Voice Out then plays a silent sound between paragraphs. The silent sound keeps the headphones awake.

{% hint style="info" %}
If you do not use Bluetooth headphones or speakers, you do not need this setting.
{% endhint %}

# Why did the Google Translate voices disappear?

The Google Translate voices are free voices from Google. Google limits how much you can use them. To prevent a block from Google, Voice Out applies this limit:

* After 60 minutes of continuous use, Voice Out stops the Google Translate voices for 15 minutes.
* During these 15 minutes, the Google Translate voices are not in the **Voice** list.

After 15 minutes, the voices come back automatically.

## What to do during the 15 minutes

* Select a different voice, for example a browser voice or an offline voice.
* For long periods of listening without limits, use a premium voice. Refer to [Upgrade To Premium](/premium/upgrade-to-premium).

# What is "Connect Google Wavenet"?

Voice Out gives you some free Google Wavenet voices. These voices use Google's public demo page. Before you can use them, you must connect Voice Out to the demo page one time.

When you select one of these voices for the first time, Voice Out shows **Connect Google Wavenet** with **Step 1 of 2** and **Step 2 of 2**.

## Connect Google Wavenet

1. If Voice Out shows **Grant permissions**, click it. Then click **Allow**.\
   Voice Out needs this permission to read the connection data from the demo page.
2. Click **Connect Google Wavenet**.\
   Voice Out opens the Google demo page in a new tab.
3. On the Google page, click the blue **SPEAK IT** button.
4. If Google shows a checkbox, select **I'm not a robot**.
5. Wait for the green message: "Successful, you can now use Google Wavenet voices."
6. Close the tab.

You can now use the free Google Wavenet voices.

{% hint style="warning" %}
These free voices depend on a Google demo page. Google can stop or change this page at any time. Then the voices stop. For reliable voices, use premium voices or your own Google API key. Refer to [Upgrade To Premium](/premium/upgrade-to-premium) or [Enable Custom Voices](/introduction/enable-custom-voices).
{% endhint %}

# Does Voice Out store the text I listen to?

No. Voice Out does not store the text that you listen to. Voice Out reads a page only when you start Voice Out on it.

Where the text goes depends on the voice that you use:

| Voice | Where the text goes |
| -------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Browser and offline voices | The text stays on your computer. Your browser or operating system makes the audio. |
| Premium voices | Voice Out sends the text to its servers and to the voice provider. They return the audio. Voice Out does not store the text or the audio. Voice Out counts the characters to calculate your credits. |
| Free Google voices (Google Translate and Google Wavenet) | Your browser sends the text directly to Google. |
| Custom voices with your API key | Your browser sends the text directly to the provider that you set. Your API keys stay in your browser. |

# How to activate Voice Out Premium on a new computer/profile?

   Voice Out works in Chrome, Edge, and other Chromium browsers on Windows, Mac, Linux, and ChromeOS.

{% endhint %}

# Premium voices do not play after I upgraded

When you select a premium voice, Voice Out examines your account. If Voice Out cannot play the premium voice, it changes the voice back to **Auto select** and opens a page in your browser. The page tells you the cause of the problem.

| Page that opens                                 | Cause                                                      | Solution                                                                                   |
| ----------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Login page | You are not logged in to Voice Out. | Log in with the account that you used to upgrade. |
| Premium page (`voiceout.app/premium/`) | Premium is not active for this account or in this browser. | Do the steps in [Activate Premium manually](#activate-premium-manually). |
| Credit packs page (`voiceout.app/add-credits/`) | You used all your premium credits for this month. | Buy a credit pack, or wait for your monthly reset. Refer to [Credit Packs](/credit-packs). |

After you correct the problem, select the premium voice again.

## Activate Premium manually

1. Open the activation page: <https://voiceout.app/premium/activate/>.
2. Make sure that you are logged in with the account that you used to upgrade.\
   If you logged in with a different account, log out. Then log in with the correct account.
3. Wait for the page to activate Premium.
4. Open the Voice Out Settings page and select a premium voice again.

## Other causes

* **Your payment failed.** Voice Out pauses Premium until the payment is complete. Refer to [My payment failed. How do I update my payment method?](/help/account-and-billing/my-payment-failed-how-do-i-update-my-payment-method)
* **You did not select a premium voice.** Voice Out does not change your voice automatically after you upgrade. Refer to [Premium voices](/premium/voice-out-premium-guide#premium-voices).

If the problem continues, send an email to <support@voiceout.app>. Include the email address of your Voice Out account.

# How do premium credits work?

Premium voices use premium credits. Voice Out Premium gives you 400,000 premium credits each month.

## How Voice Out counts credits

* A premium voice uses one credit for each character that it reads. Spaces and punctuation are also characters.
* Voices with names that start with **OpenAI** use two credits for each character.
* Browser voices, offline voices, the free Google voices, and custom voices do not use credits.
* If a pronunciation rule makes a text longer, the voice uses more credits.

{% hint style="info" %}
One page of text has approximately 3,000 characters. Thus, 400,000 credits are sufficient for approximately 130 pages each month.
{% endhint %}

Voice Out prepares the next part of the text before the current part ends. This prevents pauses in the audio. If you stop the audio, Voice Out has possibly used credits for the next part also.

## When your credits reset

Your monthly credits reset one time each month. Monthly credits that you do not use do not carry over to the next month.

## See your credits

Go to your account page: <https://voiceout.app/accounts/me/>. The **Premium Credit Usage** area shows:

* The credits that you used this month
* The date when your credits reset
* Your credit pack credits, if you bought credit packs

## If you use all your credits

Voice Out opens the credit packs page. You have three options:

* Buy a credit pack. Each pack gives you 400,000 credits for $4. Pack credits do not expire. Refer to [Credit Packs](/credit-packs).
* Use a browser voice until your credits reset.
* Use a custom voice with your own API key. Refer to [Enable Custom Voices](/introduction/enable-custom-voices).

By default, Voice Out finds the language of each page automatically. To show only the voices for one language, set **Primary language** in the **General** section.

# How to read PDFs with Voice Out?

Voice Out reads PDFs. The procedure depends on where the PDF is.

## PDFs on a website

1. Open the PDF in your browser.
2. Click the Voice Out button.
3. If Voice Out shows **Grant permissions**, click it. Then click **Allow**.\
   Voice Out needs this permission one time only. Refer to [Why does Voice Out ask for permission to read this page?](/help/general/why-does-voice-out-ask-for-permission-to-read-this-page)
4. Voice Out opens the PDF in the Voice Out PDF viewer and starts to read.

This procedure also applies to PDFs that you open in the Adobe Acrobat extension and in Kami.

## PDFs on your computer

When you open a PDF from your computer, Voice Out opens the Voice Out PDF reader at <https://voiceout.app/readpdf/>. Voice Out shows "Please use the form to upload your PDF file to Voice Out".

1. In the Voice Out PDF reader, open your PDF file with the open-file button.
2. Click the Voice Out button to start to read.

## PDFs inside a webpage

2. Click the **PDF viewer** link in the message.
3. Open the PDF that you downloaded.

To do a test, try to select a few words on the page with your mouse:

* If you can select the words, Voice Out can usually read them.
