# How to enable Voice Out on local file URLs?

A local file is a file on your computer, for example a PDF that you open from your Downloads folder. The address of a local file starts with `file://`.

For security, Chrome does not let extensions read local files. You must give Voice Out permission to read them. Do these steps:

1. Open Chrome.
2. Right-click the Voice Out button, then click **Manage Extension**.
3. Find the **Allow access to file URLs** switch.

4. Click the switch. When the switch is blue, Voice Out can read local files.
5. Open the local file again, then start Voice Out.
